After loading the "family truckster" at 11 pm last night, Brian and I had the fabulous idea to just jump in the car and head on to Michigan instead of waiting for the morning. No, we were not under the influence of any prescription narcotics. Our 18 hour trip was really wonderful. And I don't mean wonderful as a relative term. I mean that I have had trips 30 minutes away from my home that were more grueling. Seriously.
Here are some of my favorite parts of Day One:
- My husband gathering the family and leading us in prayer for our trip
- The soft sound of "oldies" radio and the contented breathing of the five people I love the most as I took my 2 am driving turn
- A wonderful heart-t0-heart with my husband at 4 am about the direction we want our family to go. (It is amazing what we can say to one another under the cover of the night)
- A beautiful sunrise over the cornfields of Iowa
- Playing Catch Phrase with the kids
- My youngest child's awe as we crossed the Mississippi River
- Less than 15 inquiries as to whether or not "we are there, yet"--that is less than 1 per hour. For four children, that is amazing stuff
- Traveling through six states in 18 hours
- Arriving at our destination ahead of schedule as opposed to behind, which is so much more common for us
- Watching our kids renew old friendships almost instantaneously
- Taking a "mom's only" walk with my good friend
- Adonai's hand on this entire trip to this point

Who are all of those BIG kids? Are they related to the "little kids" I used to know that dearly loved Buzz, Woody, Bob and Larry?
