Okay, so the dishwasher is broken. But it can be fixed for $11. Yay.
But it will take 7-10 days for the part to arrive. Boo.
For an extra $40, I could have it here in 2 days. Not on your life. Criminals!
So, herein lies the problem:
My family of 6 still feels that they need to be fed and "watered" on a regular basis. And all those dishes have to be hand-washed. And I don't like doing dishes by hand.
Growing up, we didn't have a dishwasher (well, we did--my mom--and when she went back to work full-time, my sibs and I were supposed to do it). So I washed dishes when I was a kid.
Plus, for the first 3 years of married life, Hubby and I didn't have a dishwasher. And we washed dishes by hand.
So, I'm thinking that for the next 7-10 days the kids can wash dishes. And I am justifying it like this:
~Currently, you would think someone was torturing them based on their response when told to load and unload the dishwasher. I'm hoping that doing some dishes by hand will make them realize what a nice gift a dishwasher is.
~What if they wind up living in a studio apartment in NYC where the entire kitchen is the size of the average dining room table and there isn't any room for an automatic dishwasher?
~Knowing how to do dishes will (hopefully) increase my sons' prospects of being good "husband material."
~Having my daughters see that my sons also have to help do the dishes will help them to realize that having a p*#!s shouldn't automatically eliminate one from domestic duties (cleaning toilets is next, boys!).
~I had to do it when I was a kid, and I turned out okay.
But really, all of this is just a ruse for the fact that I am making my kids do it because I don't want to do it, myself.
So, I need to know--
Does that make me a bad parent?

My vote is to have the kids do the dishes. They will need the practice. Anyways, as a mommy you don't want to send them out into the big bad world not knowing the basics of life (like washing dishes)- do you?
Amen to that! We grew up pretty much knowing that the only reason we were born was to take over the household chores. :)
A bad parent? No. It makes you a brilliant parent! ;)
