Of All the Hats I Wear...

I wear many hats. Most of us do.

I was talking to one of my good friends the other day. She wears many hats, as well. She is a mom, home school teacher, seamstress, mother-in-law, mentor to me--whether she likes it or not :o)--and most recently, has gotten to add "grandma" to her new hat collection.

May has been crazy for her--a daughter made first communion, a daughter graduated high school, a daughter had a baby, we had a spring dance show, she is sewing for so many weddings I've lost count. But I digress.

Back to the story--I called her up on the phone and asked if it was a good time to talk. She said that she had just been outside moving hoses around. They do a garden and all of that jazz. She then said something amazing. "I am doing "mom things" this week. And I'm lovin' it!"

I was jealous--a bit. I thought back on my day. My job is over for the summer, and I had some "mom things" planned for the day, as well. But things didn't really go according to plan.

8:30am~ rush 6YO's bunny to the vet. Bunny isn't eating and is pooping something I won't even TRY to describe on a blog. In case you like to snack while you "catch up."

9:00am~run errands on the way home from the vet--Library, Tractor Supply, Dillon's.

9:30am~call piano tuner about an opinion on a possible piano, call and cancel cable (originally signed up for it for Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, History Channel, etc. Instead kids are rotting out their brains on The Suite Life of Zach and Cody and Wizards of Waverly Place. Or worse still, they complain that "There's nothing to watch!!). I also call the orthodontist to tell them that a wire has come loose and a bracket has come out on my daughter's braces. No one answers (are they in cahoots with my doctor's office?) so I leave a message.

11:30am~take daughter to babysitting job.

noon~make lunch, try to supervise kitchen cleanup, text my friend who is taking a continuing ed class, and finally talk to someone from the orthodontist's office.

1:00pm~make a million phone calls to get my daughter in to see the ortho and have her make sure it is okay to take babysitting charge with us.

2:00pm~pick up daughter and babysitting charge from his tae kwan do class--rush to the orthodontist--they close at 3 during the summer. Boy, I wish my husband made enough money that he could quit work at 3 during the summer,--and take them to our coffee shop in town because everyone deserves smoothies for being such great troopers.

3:00pm~start a load of laundry so all baseball players have clean "baseball gear" for their first games.

3:45pm~take children who have been BEGGING since it opened to go to the water park. I have waited thirteen years for the afternoon that I had at the water park today. All of my children entertained themselves. 6YO even went on the lazy river all by herself. She and I did go down the water slide twice, but otherwise, I sat in a lounge chair, read a book, and tried to get some color on my "pasty white" skin.

5:15pm~dash home to make sandwiches, get dressed for games and VBS.

6:15pm~panic because car keys are nowhere to be found and hubby has the other car at the ball field with the boys.

6:20pm~hubby returns with his car when he realizes my keys are in it. BTW--VBS starts in 10 minutes and we have to pick up 6YO's best friend.

6:31pm~hurry in to church and drop girls off at VBS.

6:45pm~take oldest daughter to get a haircut--she wants it shoulder length for summer.

7:45pm~go BACK to church to pick up daughter to take her to softball game. Where she did great, by the way. She smacked the ball both times and the second time, scored a run!

9:30pm~supervise showers and betimes.

10pm~go on a 4 mile run with hubby.

midnight~pass out on the couch from sheer exhaustion!

Looking back, I got very little done that I had on my "mom things" list. But looking back, the entire day was full of different "mom things." And really, I had a great day!

Of all the hats I wear...

I love my "mom hat" the best!
