Well, we got some bad news on the computer. In the process of trying to fix whatever problem was causing the nasty blue screen, the hard drive on my connection to the outside world began to crash. Apparently, there is a pretty good chance that my files can be saved, but my computer is going to require a new hard drive. So when I get home, I will be looking for a computer doctor, and here is a nickel's worth of free advice: Back up your files!!! Regularly!!!
We are in a hotel room 9 hours from our next destination, and I thought I would take some time to quickly jot down some highlights of our visit to Michigan from my fellow travelers:
Youngest Child:
Favorite Part of Trip-"Playing in the Wave Pool "(after sulking for 45 minutes, and only enjoying the last 10)
Something I learned that I didn't already know-"About the Brothers that made bikes and the first airplane..." (referring to the Wright Brothers--whose house we saw at Greenfield Village)
Third Child:
Favorite Part of Trip-"Riding Go-Karts"
Something I learned that I didn't already know-"In the original game of baseball, there were four bases and no strikes or fouls"
Second Child:
Favorite Part of Trip-"Playing Baseball with friends and brother"
Something I learned that I didn't already know-"You can throw the ball to get a player out, and you could run the bases in any order in old-fashioned baseball, and a cheeseburger used to be $0.25."
Oldest Child:
Favorite Part of Trip-"Touring Greenfield Village"
Something I learned that I didn't already know-"When Abraham Lincoln was practicing law, he rode a circuit, trying cases in different small towns"
Hubby:
Favorite Part of Trip-"Talking to you on the trip up, Renewing old friendships, playing with the kids"
Something I learned that I didn't already know-"How to get to Detroit, MI; playing 'one more inning' to make a ballgame fair isn't such a good idea if it lands you in a stat care for an hour and a swollen and bruised foot afterward"
Me:
Favorite Part of Trip-"I had many favorite parts, but probably the best ones were spending time with my friends and watching our kids interact and getting to stand in a courthouse building where Abraham Lincoln practiced law. I still get a catch in my throat thinking about it."
Something I learned that I didn't already know-"Americans have been paying toll to drive on certain roads since the 1600's; hard drives can crash without warning, and with no apparent cause; The Village is actually a pretty good movie with some really interesting discussion themes (I am not really a creepy movie fan, and I avoid them at all costs); how to play Spoons; Heinz's first condiment was not ketchup, but a horseradish sauce; Noah Webster published a Bible."
As we pulled away from our friends' house, my children unanimously requested that we make a visit to Detroit a yearly ritual. Not because of all of the fun things that we did, even though there were many of those, but because of the friendships that were formed, which makes this one of the best vacations we have ever taken.
" Blessed be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds Is like that to that above."

This makes me want to go on vacation...and spend some time with far-away friends. I'm glad you had a great time, but am also very glad you are coming home!!
My earliest childhood memory is of a roadtrip...the vehicle was a 1949 Plymouth with a clutch pedal connected to linkage that came up right through the floorboard. During the trip we drove through a flooded road and I remember staring at those pedals on the floorboard as the sound of the water beat against the underside of the car. Roadtrips make fine memories that last. I know the kids will be talking about it for years if not forever.
I am always happy when I hear that poeple like "The Village". It is Shymalan's best movie in my view. He is a much better filmmaker than his self-imposed genre would suggest. He showed his skill with comedy in "Signs", and in "The Village" he has really shown his skill with the camera. The film is visually terrific; great music; wonderful actors (e.g. Hurt, Brody). Unlike the "Sixth Sense", I saw the endgame on this one early on, but that actually added to my enjoyment of the picture. Just as Hitchcock taught everyone, letting the audience see it first actually adds to the suspense. The movie does have a couple of scary moments that are unexpected and very effective. Casey is right on target about the themes in this picture. This is so much more that what you would expect from Shymalan.
